Some of Major Prophecies Fulfilled

The Bible contains numerous prophecies that have been fulfilled with astonishing accuracy, demonstrating its divine origin and reliability. Here are some of the major prophecies fulfilled, covering a range of events from ancient times to the life of Jesus Christ:

1. The Birth of Jesus Christ

The prophecies concerning the birth of Jesus Christ were given hundreds of years before His arrival and fulfilled precisely as foretold.

  • Born of a Virgin:

    • Prophecy: "Therefore the Lord himself shall give you a sign; Behold, a virgin shall conceive, and bear a son, and shall call his name Immanuel."
      Isaiah 7:14
    • Fulfillment: "Now all this was done, that it might be fulfilled which was spoken of the Lord by the prophet, saying, Behold, a virgin shall be with child, and shall bring forth a son, and they shall call his name Emmanuel, which being interpreted is, God with us."
      Matthew 1:22-23
  • Born in Bethlehem:

    • Prophecy: "But thou, Bethlehem Ephratah, though thou be little among the thousands of Judah, yet out of thee shall he come forth unto me that is to be ruler in Israel; whose goings forth have been from of old, from everlasting."
      Micah 5:2
    • Fulfillment: "And Joseph also went up from Galilee, out of the city of Nazareth, into Judaea, unto the city of David, which is called Bethlehem; (because he was of the house and lineage of David:) To be taxed with Mary his espoused wife, being great with child."
      Luke 2:4-5

2. The Crucifixion of Jesus Christ

The death of Jesus Christ by crucifixion was prophesied centuries before it occurred. The details of His suffering and the manner of His death were fulfilled exactly as foretold.

  • Piercing of His Hands and Feet:

    • Prophecy: "For dogs have compassed me: the assembly of the wicked have inclosed me: they pierced my hands and my feet."
      Psalm 22:16
    • Fulfillment: "And when they were come to the place, which is called Calvary, there they crucified him, and the malefactors, one on the right hand, and the other on the left."
      Luke 23:33
  • No Broken Bones:

    • Prophecy: "He keepeth all his bones: not one of them is broken."
      Psalm 34:20
    • Fulfillment: "But when they came to Jesus, and saw that he was dead already, they brake not his legs."
      John 19:33
  • Casting Lots for His Garments:

    • Prophecy: "They part my garments among them, and cast lots upon my vesture."
      Psalm 22:18
    • Fulfillment: "And they crucified him, and parted his garments, casting lots: that it might be fulfilled which was spoken by the prophet, They parted my garments among them, and upon my vesture did they cast lots."
      Matthew 27:35

3. The Resurrection of Jesus Christ

The resurrection of Jesus Christ was also prophesied in the Old Testament and fulfilled precisely in the New Testament.

  • Prophecy: "For thou wilt not leave my soul in hell; neither wilt thou suffer thine Holy One to see corruption."
    Psalm 16:10
  • Fulfillment: "He is not here: for he is risen, as he said. Come, see the place where the Lord lay."
    Matthew 28:6

4. The Fall of Babylon

The Bible predicted the downfall of Babylon, one of the greatest empires of the ancient world. This prophecy was fulfilled in great detail.

  • Prophecy:
    • Babylon would be overthrown like Sodom and Gomorrah:
"And Babylon, the glory of kingdoms, the beauty of the Chaldees' excellency, shall be as when God overthrew Sodom and Gomorrah."
      Isaiah 13:19
    • Babylon would be left uninhabited:
"It shall never be inhabited, neither shall it be dwelt in from generation to generation: neither shall the Arabian pitch tent there; neither shall the shepherds make their fold there."
      Isaiah 13:20
  • Fulfillment:
In 539 B.C., Babylon was captured by the Medes and Persians under King Cyrus. Over time, the city fell into ruin, exactly as prophesied. Today, Babylon remains uninhabited.

5. The Destruction of Jerusalem and the Second Temple

Jesus prophesied the destruction of the city of Jerusalem and its temple, which was fulfilled within a generation.

  • Prophecy:
"And Jesus said unto them, See ye not all these things? verily I say unto you, There shall not be left here one stone upon another, that shall not be thrown down."
    Matthew 24:2

  • Fulfillment:
In A.D. 70, the Roman army, under the command of Titus, destroyed Jerusalem and the Second Temple, fulfilling Jesus' prophecy. The temple was completely dismantled, with not one stone left upon another.

6. The Dispersion and Regathering of Israel

The Bible foretold that the Jewish people would be scattered among the nations and later regathered to their land.

  • The Dispersion:

    • Prophecy: "And the Lord shall scatter thee among all people, from the one end of the earth even unto the other."
      Deuteronomy 28:64
    • Fulfillment:
This was fulfilled when the Jews were exiled by the Babylonians in the 6th century B.C. and later by the Romans in A.D. 70. The Jewish people were dispersed throughout the world for nearly 2,000 years.
  • The Regathering:

    • Prophecy: "And I will bring them out from the people, and gather them from the countries, and will bring them to their own land, and feed them upon the mountains of Israel."
      Ezekiel 34:13
    • Fulfillment:
The establishment of the modern State of Israel in 1948 is seen by many as the fulfillment of this prophecy, where Jews from all over the world returned to their ancestral homeland.

7. The Coming of the Messiah as a Suffering Servant

The Bible predicted that the Messiah would come not only as a king but as a suffering servant who would bear the sins of the world.

  • Prophecy:
    • "Surely he hath borne our griefs, and carried our sorrows: yet we did esteem him stricken, smitten of God, and afflicted. But he was wounded for our transgressions, he was bruised for our iniquities: the chastisement of our peace was upon him; and with his stripes we are healed."
      Isaiah 53:4-5
  • Fulfillment:
This prophecy was fulfilled in Jesus Christ, who was crucified and suffered on behalf of humanity. His sacrificial death was the fulfillment of the Messianic promise as outlined in Isaiah.

Conclusion

These fulfilled prophecies provide powerful evidence of the Bible’s divine inspiration. The precision with which these events unfolded—particularly those regarding Jesus Christ’s life, death, and resurrection—underscores the reliability of the Bible and its message. These fulfilled prophecies point to a God who is sovereign over history and who faithfully brings His Word to pass.

  • Isaiah 46:9-10:
"Remember the former things of old: for I am God, and there is none else; I am God, and there is none like me, Declaring the end from the beginning, and from ancient times the things that are not yet done, saying, My counsel shall stand, and I will do all my pleasure."
