Taking Care of Our God-Given Land

“Why We Must Take Care of Our God-Given Land and Make It Productive”

1. The Mandate of Stewardship

Genesis 2:15:
"And the Lord God took the man, and put him into the garden of Eden to dress it and to keep it."

  • In the creation narrative, God established humanity as the steward of His creation. The verbs "dress" and "keep" indicate both a responsibility to cultivate and maintain the land.
    • "Dress" translates to "to work" or "to serve," showing that the land requires intentional effort to make it fruitful.
    • "Keep" means "to protect" or "to preserve," emphasizing sustainability and care.
  • This mandate applies universally, reminding us that God's creation is not ours to exploit but to nurture for His glory.

2. God's Ownership of the Land

Psalm 24:1:
"The earth is the Lord's, and the fulness thereof; the world, and they that dwell therein."

  • This verse reminds us that the land is not our possession; it belongs to God. As tenants or stewards, we have a sacred duty to care for the land, reflecting His ownership and sovereignty.
  • Failing to steward the land properly disrespects its true Owner, contradicting our role as caretakers of His creation.

Leviticus 25:23:
"The land shall not be sold for ever: for the land is mine; for ye are strangers and sojourners with me."

  • God instructed the Israelites to treat the land with reverence, acknowledging His ultimate ownership. This principle applies today, urging us to preserve and respect the resources He has provided.

3. The Land as a Gift and a Trust

Jeremiah 2:7:
"And I brought you into a plentiful country, to eat the fruit thereof and the goodness thereof; but when ye entered, ye defiled my land, and made mine heritage an abomination."

  • The land is described as a heritage, a blessing from God. Yet, neglect and abuse of this gift invite consequences.
  • To honor God, we must treat the land as sacred, ensuring it remains productive and fruitful, not defiled by carelessness or exploitation.

4. The Call to Be Fruitful

Genesis 1:28:
"And God blessed them, and God said unto them, Be fruitful, and multiply, and replenish the earth, and subdue it: and have dominion over the fish of the sea, and over the fowl of the air, and over every living thing that moveth upon the earth."

  • This command to "be fruitful and multiply" is not limited to procreation but extends to productivity in all areas of life, including agriculture and the management of the earth's resources.
  • To "subdue" the earth implies organizing and cultivating it to bring forth its potential, aligning with God's will for creation.

5. The Principle of Diligence

Proverbs 12:11:
"He that tilleth his land shall be satisfied with bread: but he that followeth vain persons is void of understanding."

  • This wisdom verse underscores the reward of diligent labor. Tilling the land symbolizes productive work, which leads to provision and sustenance.
  • Neglect or idleness in caring for the land is equated with foolishness, while faithful labor honors God's design.

6. Sustainability and Avoiding Defilement

Numbers 35:33-34:
"So ye shall not pollute the land wherein ye are: for blood it defileth the land: and the land cannot be cleansed of the blood that is shed therein, but by the blood of him that shed it. Defile not therefore the land which ye shall inhabit, wherein I dwell: for I the Lord dwell among the children of Israel."

  • God's presence in the land requires its purity. Pollution—whether physical, moral, or spiritual—disrespects the sanctity of the land.
  • Caring for the land also reflects an understanding that it is a place of God’s dwelling, further elevating its importance.

7. The Redemption of Creation

Romans 8:19-21:
"For the earnest expectation of the creature waiteth for the manifestation of the sons of God. For the creature was made subject to vanity, not willingly, but by reason of him who hath subjected the same in hope, because the creature itself also shall be delivered from the bondage of corruption into the glorious liberty of the children of God."

  • Creation groans under the effects of sin but looks forward to restoration. As believers, part of our role is to reflect God’s redemptive work by treating the land with care, minimizing harm, and contributing to its flourishing.

8. Parable of the Talents – Accountability for Resources

Matthew 25:21:
"His lord said unto him, Well done, thou good and faithful servant: thou hast been faithful over a few things, I will make thee ruler over many things: enter thou into the joy of thy lord."

  • Though not directly about the land, this parable illustrates the principle of stewardship. God entrusts us with resources—be it land, time, or talents—and expects us to be faithful and productive.
  • Wasting or neglecting the land is a failure to multiply what God has given us.

Caring for our God-given land and making it productive is both a divine mandate and a practical expression of stewardship. The Bible teaches that the earth belongs to God, and we are entrusted with its care. This includes not only preserving the land but also cultivating it to provide sustenance and reflect God’s glory. Neglecting this responsibility dishonors God, while diligent care fulfills our role as His stewards. Let us, therefore, commit to keeping and tending the land, knowing that in doing so, we align ourselves with God’s will and purpose.

How to be a good steward of God's land based on biblical principles from Genesis, Psalms, and Proverbs:

  1. Recognize God's Ownership and Our Role as Stewards

    • Genesis 1:26-28: These verses describe God creating humanity and giving them dominion over the earth. This dominion isn't about exploitation but responsible stewardship.
    • Psalm 24:1: "The earth is the Lord's, and everything in it, the world, and all who live in it." This verse reminds us that the land belongs to God, and we are entrusted to care for it.
  2. Cultivate and Protect the Land

    • Genesis 2:15: "The Lord God took the man and put him in the Garden of Eden to work it and take care of it." This directive emphasizes both cultivation (enhancing the land) and protection (preserving its health and beauty).
    • Proverbs 12:10: "The righteous care for the needs of their animals, but the kindest acts of the wicked are cruel." This shows that a good steward is compassionate and considerate of all living creatures, indicating an ethic of care for the land and its inhabitants.
  3. Practice Wisdom and Sustainability

    • Proverbs 3:19-20: "By wisdom the Lord laid the earth's foundations, by understanding he set the heavens in place; by his knowledge the watery depths were divided, and the clouds let drop the dew." God’s creation was done with wisdom and understanding, and we should emulate this by making wise and sustainable decisions about land use.
    • Proverbs 27:23-27: These verses advise knowing the condition of your flocks and giving attention to your herds, which implies that wise management and awareness of resources are key to sustaining them.
  4. Give Thanks and Rest

    • Psalm 65:9-13: This passage praises God for watering the earth and providing an abundant harvest, recognizing that all provision comes from Him. Acknowledging God's providence fosters gratitude and a sense of responsibility.
    • Exodus 23:10-11: While not directly from Genesis, Psalms, or Proverbs, this principle is found throughout the Old Testament. It commands allowing the land to rest every seventh year, promoting long-term fertility and sustainability of the land.

By recognizing God's ownership, cultivating and protecting the land, practicing wisdom and sustainability, and giving thanks while allowing for rest, we fulfill our role as stewards of God's creation.
