The Authority and Veracity of Scripture Alone
Introduction
The doctrine of Sola Scriptura, meaning "Scripture Alone," is one of the five foundational principles of the Reformation. It asserts that the Bible is the ultimate and sole authority for faith, doctrine, and practice. This teaching stands in contrast to traditions that place equal or greater authority on church teachings, councils, or human traditions.
A key aspect of Sola Scriptura is The Veracity of the Scripture—the absolute truthfulness and reliability of God’s Word. The Bible is not only divinely inspired but also infallible and inerrant. "All scripture is given by inspiration of God, and is profitable for doctrine, for reproof, for correction, for instruction in righteousness: That the man of God may be perfect, throughly furnished unto all good works."
Since all Scripture is God-breathed, it is completely true and free from error. It is sufficient for teaching, correction, and spiritual maturity.
Numbers 23:19
"God is not a man, that he should lie; neither the son of man, that he should repent: hath he said, and shall he not do it? or hath he spoken, and shall he not make it good?"
Because God does not lie, His Word is always true. The veracity of Scripture is guaranteed by the very nature of God Himself.
John 17:17
"Sanctify them through thy truth: thy word is truth."
Jesus explicitly declares that God’s Word is truth. If the Bible is true in all that it teaches, then it must be the final and highest authority.
2. Scripture Is Superior to Human Traditions
The Bible warns against placing human traditions above or alongside God's Word.
Mark 7:7-9
"Howbeit in vain do they worship me, teaching for doctrines the commandments of men. For laying aside the commandment of God, ye hold the tradition of men, as the washing of pots and cups: and many other such like things ye do. And he said unto them, Full well ye reject the commandment of God, that ye may keep your own tradition."
Jesus rebuked the Pharisees for prioritizing traditions over God’s commandments. This principle underscores Sola Scriptura—human traditions must never replace the authority of Scripture.
Colossians 2:8
"Beware lest any man spoil you through philosophy and vain deceit, after the tradition of men, after the rudiments of the world, and not after Christ."
Believers are warned against being led astray by human traditions and worldly philosophies. The Bible remains the unchanging standard for faith and doctrine.
3. The Sufficiency of Scripture for Salvation
The Word of God is all that is needed for salvation and spiritual growth.
Romans 10:17
"So then faith cometh by hearing, and hearing by the word of God."
Faith is birthed through hearing the Word of God, not through man-made doctrines or traditions. The Bible alone contains the message of salvation.
John 5:39
"Search the scriptures; for in them ye think ye have eternal life: and they are they which testify of me."
Jesus pointed to the Scriptures as the ultimate testimony concerning Him. They contain the words of eternal life, directing people to Christ as the only Savior.
1 Peter 1:23-25
"Being born again, not of corruptible seed, but of incorruptible, by the word of God, which liveth and abideth for ever. For all flesh is as grass, and all the glory of man as the flower of grass. The grass withereth, and the flower thereof falleth away: But the word of the Lord endureth for ever. And this is the word which by the gospel is preached unto you."
The eternal nature of God’s Word means that it alone is sufficient for salvation. Human traditions fade, but Scripture remains unchanging and enduring.
4. Scripture Judges All Teachings and Spirits
The Bible is the standard by which all teachings, prophecies, and doctrines must be tested.
Acts 17:11
"These were more noble than those in Thessalonica, in that they received the word with all readiness of mind, and searched the scriptures daily, whether those things were so."
The Bereans were commended for testing even the Apostle Paul’s teaching against Scripture. This reinforces the principle that God’s Word is the final authority in all matters of faith.
1 John 4:1
"Beloved, believe not every spirit, but try the spirits whether they are of God: because many false prophets are gone out into the world."
Christians are commanded to test all spiritual teachings against the Word of God. Any doctrine that contradicts Scripture must be rejected.
5. The Permanence and Unchanging Nature of God's Word
God’s Word is eternal, unchangeable, and authoritative for all generations.
Isaiah 40:8
"The grass withereth, the flower fadeth: but the word of our God shall stand for ever."
While human wisdom and traditions change, God’s Word remains firm forever.
Matthew 24:35
"Heaven and earth shall pass away, but my words shall not pass away."
Jesus Himself affirmed the enduring nature of Scripture, emphasizing its eternal authority.
Psalm 12:6-7
"The words of the Lord are pure words: as silver tried in a furnace of earth, purified seven times. Thou shalt keep them, O Lord, thou shalt preserve them from this generation for ever."
God not only inspired the Scriptures but also preserved them. His Word remains uncorrupted and trustworthy through all generations.

The doctrine of Sola Scriptura teaches that Scripture alone is the final authority for faith, doctrine, and Christian living. It is divinely inspired, completely sufficient, and superior to human traditions.
Furthermore, The Veracity of the Scripture assures us that God’s Word is entirely true, reliable, and unchanging. Every doctrine, teaching, and tradition must be tested by the unshakable foundation of God’s Word.
