Israel Under Fire

Violence and Conflict between Israel and its neighbors since the 1970s

  1. Munich Massacre (1972): During the Munich Olympics in 1972, Palestinian terrorists belonging to the group Black September kidnapped and killed 11 Israeli athletes.

  2. Yom Kippur War (1973): Egypt and Syria launched a surprise attack on Israel during the Jewish holiday of Yom Kippur. The conflict resulted in significant casualties on both sides.

  3. First Intifada (1987-1993): A Palestinian uprising against Israeli occupation began in the late 1980s. The Intifada involved widespread protests, riots, and acts of violence by Palestinians against Israeli military and civilians, and by Israeli forces against Palestinians.

  4. Oslo Accords (1993): Israel and the Palestine Liberation Organization (PLO) signed the Oslo Accords, aimed at achieving peace through a gradual process of Palestinian self-governance in the West Bank and Gaza Strip. However, the peace process has faced numerous setbacks and periods of violence since then.

  5. Second Intifada (2000-2005): A second uprising erupted in 2000, characterized by suicide bombings, shootings, and other attacks by Palestinian militants against Israeli civilians and military targets, as well as Israeli military operations in Palestinian territories.

  6. Lebanon War (2006): Hezbollah, a Lebanese militant group backed by Iran and Syria, launched an attack on Israel, sparking a month-long conflict that resulted in significant casualties and destruction on both sides.

  7. Gaza Wars (2008-2009, 2012, 2014): Israel has engaged in multiple military operations in the Gaza Strip, targeting Hamas, the Islamist group that governs Gaza. These conflicts have resulted in significant civilian casualties and destruction in Gaza, as well as Israeli casualties and damage from rocket attacks launched by Hamas.

  8. Jerusalem Embassy Protests (2018): Following the relocation of the U.S. embassy in Israel to Jerusalem, protests erupted in Gaza, resulting in clashes between Palestinian demonstrators and Israeli forces. Scores of Palestinians were killed and thousands injured.

  9. Violence in Jerusalem (2021): Tensions flared in Jerusalem, particularly around the Al-Aqsa Mosque compound, leading to clashes between Palestinians and Israeli police. The situation escalated into a brief conflict between Israel and Hamas, resulting in significant casualties and destruction before a ceasefire was reached.
