Christ’s Role in the Trinity
1. Jesus as the Son of God and Equal with the Father
Key Verse: John 10:30
"I and my Father are one."
Key Verse: John 5:18
"Therefore the Jews sought the more to kill him, because he not only had broken the sabbath, but said also that God was his Father, making himself equal with God."
Explanation: Jesus’ declaration of oneness with the Father highlights His divine nature and equality with God. Jesus is distinct as the Son yet fully equal in essence with the Father, illustrating the unity and distinctness within the Trinity.
2. Jesus as the Image of the Invisible God
Key Verse: Colossians 1:15
"Who is the image of the invisible God, the firstborn of every creature."
Key Verse: Hebrews 1:3
"Who being the brightness of his glory, and the express image of his person, and upholding all things by the word of his power, when he had by himself purged our sins, sat down on the right hand of the Majesty on high."
Explanation: Jesus, as the image of the invisible God, makes the unseen God visible to humanity. He fully reflects God’s character, nature, and authority, perfectly revealing God’s glory and person.
3. Jesus’ Role in Creation
Key Verse: John 1:1-3
"In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. The same was in the beginning with God. All things were made by him; and without him was not any thing made that was made."
Key Verse: Colossians 1:16
"For by him were all things created, that are in heaven, and that are in earth, visible and invisible, whether they be thrones, or dominions, or principalities, or powers: all things were created by him, and for him."
Explanation: Jesus, as the Word of God, was instrumental in creation. The Father created through the Son, showing Christ’s active role and authority in bringing all things into existence. This emphasizes Jesus’ divine power and His unity with the Father in purpose and work.
4. Jesus’ Role in Redemption
Key Verse: John 3:16-17
"For God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life. For God sent not his Son into the world to condemn the world; but that the world through him might be saved."
Key Verse: 1 John 4:14
"And we have seen and do testify that the Father sent the Son to be the Saviour of the world."
Explanation: Jesus was sent by the Father to redeem humanity. His mission was motivated by God’s love and fulfilled through His life, death, and resurrection. This act of salvation shows both the unity and distinction in the Trinity, as the Father initiates, and the Son accomplishes redemption.
5. Jesus’ Role as Mediator between God and Humanity
Key Verse: 1 Timothy 2:5
"For there is one God, and one mediator between God and men, the man Christ Jesus."
Explanation: Jesus serves as the only mediator between God and humanity. As both fully divine and fully human, He bridges the gap between a holy God and fallen humanity, securing reconciliation and access to God through His sacrificial work.
6. Jesus’ Role in the Indwelling and Sending of the Holy Spirit
Key Verse: John 14:16-17
"And I will pray the Father, and he shall give you another Comforter, that he may abide with you for ever; Even the Spirit of truth; whom the world cannot receive, because it seeth him not, neither knoweth him: but ye know him; for he dwelleth with you, and shall be in you."
Key Verse: John 16:7
"Nevertheless I tell you the truth; It is expedient for you that I go away: for if I go not away, the Comforter will not come unto you; but if I depart, I will send him unto you."
Explanation: Jesus, in unity with the Father, promised and sent the Holy Spirit to be with and in believers. This act reveals the cooperative work within the Trinity and Jesus’ ongoing role in empowering believers through the Spirit.
7. Jesus as the Intercessor for Believers
Key Verse: Hebrews 7:25
"Wherefore he is able also to save them to the uttermost that come unto God by him, seeing he ever liveth to make intercession for them."
Key Verse: Romans 8:34
"Who is he that condemneth? It is Christ that died, yea rather, that is risen again, who is even at the right hand of God, who also maketh intercession for us."
Explanation: Jesus continually intercedes for believers, praying on their behalf and advocating for them before the Father. This work shows His ongoing priestly role and compassionate care within the Trinity for the spiritual well-being of His people.
8. Jesus as the Judge in Final Judgment
Key Verse: John 5:22-23
"For the Father judgeth no man, but hath committed all judgment unto the Son: That all men should honour the Son, even as they honour the Father. He that honoureth not the Son honoureth not the Father which hath sent him."
Key Verse: 2 Corinthians 5:10
"For we must all appear before the judgment seat of Christ; that every one may receive the things done in his body, according to that he hath done, whether it be good or bad."
Explanation: Jesus is given the authority to judge humanity, showing His divine authority and role in the final judgment. Honoring the Son is equivalent to honoring the Father, underscoring the Son’s divine status and His unity with the Father in administering justice.
9. Jesus as the Eternal King of the Kingdom of God
Key Verse: Philippians 2:9-11
"Wherefore God also hath highly exalted him, and given him a name which is above every name: That at the name of Jesus every knee should bow, of things in heaven, and things in earth, and things under the earth; And that every tongue should confess that Jesus Christ is Lord, to the glory of God the Father."
Key Verse: Revelation 11:15
"And the seventh angel sounded; and there were great voices in heaven, saying, The kingdoms of this world are become the kingdoms of our Lord, and of his Christ; and he shall reign for ever and ever."
Explanation: Jesus is exalted as the eternal King in God’s kingdom. His reign brings glory to God and fulfills God’s purposes in history, with all people ultimately acknowledging His Lordship.
