Daniel is an excellent biblical model.

Notice something powerful:

Daniel worked in a secular government environment under a pagan empire.

Yet his professional excellence became visible.

He didn't say:

“I'm a Christian, therefore I don't have to compete.”

He became so competent that his enemies had difficulty finding anything against him.

Three areas of professional excellence:

Competence — Know your craft.

Consistency — Be dependable.

Character — Be trustworthy.

Your testimony is weakened when you say:

“I love Jesus!”

but your employer says:

“But you're always late.”

Your clients say:

“He doesn't keep his promises.”

Your coworkers say:

“She is difficult to work with.”

“Excellence makes your testimony credible.”

Colossians 3:23:

You don't work merely for your boss.

You ultimately work before the Lord.

3. BUILD CHARACTER BEFORE YOU BUILD A CAREER

The world may promote people because of:

• talent,
• connections,
• education,
• appearance,
• charisma,
• political influence.

But God is concerned about character.

Proverbs 22:1 KJV

“A good name is rather to be chosen than great riches…”

You can recover lost money.

You can recover a failed business.

You can change careers.

But a destroyed reputation can take years to rebuild.

Teach them:

Never sacrifice your character for your career.

Don't lie to close a deal.

Don't cheat to pass an examination.

Don't manipulate people to gain promotion.

Don't steal company resources.

Don't compromise sexually because of business relationships.

Don't participate in corruption because:

“Everybody does it.”

Don't falsify reports.

Don't destroy another person's reputation to advance yourself.

Remember Joseph.

Joseph worked in Potiphar's house.

Then Joseph faced temptation.

His response was:

Genesis 39:9 KJV:

“…how then can I do this great wickedness, and sin against God?”

“What will this do to my career?”

He asked:

“How can I sin against God?”

That is kingdom character.

4. DON'T JUST SEEK SUCCESS — SEEK SIGNIFICANCE

“What do you want to accomplish with your life?”

There is nothing wrong with wanting:

• financial success,
• a beautiful home,
• a good career,
• a successful business,
• leadership,
• influence.

But success without purpose becomes empty.

Jesus asked:

“For what shall it profit a man, if he shall gain the whole world, and lose his own soul?”

Teach them to redefine success.

Worldly success:

How much can I get?

Kingdom success:

How much can God accomplish through me?

Instead of asking:

“How much money can I make?”

also ask:

“How much value can I create?”

Instead of:

“How high can I climb?”

ask:

“How many people can I help while I climb?”

Instead of:

“How famous can I become?”

ask:

“How faithfully can I represent Christ?”

5. BECOME THE KIND OF PERSON PEOPLE WANT TO ASK: “WHY ARE YOU DIFFERENT?”

This is where the professional life becomes evangelistic.

You don't always need to begin with:

“Are you saved?”

Sometimes your first sermon is your life.

Jesus said:

Matthew 5:16 KJV

“Let your light so shine before men, that they may see your good works, and glorify your Father which is in heaven.”

Notice:

LIGHT → SEEN → GOOD WORKS → GLORY TO GOD

Your coworkers should eventually notice:

“There's something different about this person.”

Why?

Because you:

• work hard,
• tell the truth,
• keep your promises,
• treat people with dignity,
• don't participate in gossip,
• don't retaliate,
• forgive,
• remain calm under pressure,
• serve others,
• admit your mistakes,
• give credit to others,
• refuse dishonest opportunities.

Then your behavior creates an opportunity for your words.

1 Peter 3:15 KJV

“…be ready always to give an answer to every man that asketh you a reason of the hope that is in you…”

Live the Gospel before you explain the Gospel.

But don't stop at good behavior.

Eventually, the Gospel must be spoken.

Good character can open the door.

Christ is the message.

6. TURN YOUR PROFESSION INTO A PLATFORM FOR KINGDOM INFLUENCE

“Don't simply enter the marketplace looking for what you can receive. Enter asking what God wants you to contribute.”

How can my business serve people?

A Christian manager:

How can I develop people?

A Christian engineer:

How can I solve problems that improve lives?

A Christian teacher:

How can I shape the next generation?

A Christian professional:

How can my expertise become a blessing?

“Ye are the salt of the earth…”

Salt doesn't exist merely to remain inside the container.

Salt must enter the environment.

Likewise, Christians cannot influence the marketplace if they completely withdraw from it.

7. FIVE RULES FOR A CHRIST-CENTERED PROFESSIONAL

RULE #1 — WORK WITH EXCELLENCE

Colossians 3:23

Don't be known as merely a Christian.

Be known as an excellent Christian.

RULE #2 — WALK WITH INTEGRITY

Your handshake should mean something.

Your word should mean something.

RULE #3 — TREAT PEOPLE WITH DIGNITY

Develop them.

“How can I become successful?”

They are living it boldly, intelligently, graciously, and excellently.

“I am called to excel.

I will walk with integrity.

I will treat people with dignity.

I will use my gifts to create value and serve others.
