Assurance of Salvation through Jesus Christ Our Lord - Module 2 | Lesson 3

Assurance of Salvation through

Jesus Christ Our Lord

Introduction

The assurance of salvation is a crucial element of Christian faith, providing believers with confidence in their eternal security through Jesus Christ. Understanding this assurance and embracing it impacts not only daily life but also the relationship with God. This subject explores the assurance of salvation, emphasizing how believers can be certain of their salvation through Jesus Christ, supported by full scriptural references.

The assurance of salvation is a foundational aspect of Christian faith, providing believers with confidence in their eternal security through Jesus Christ. It is vital for Christians to understand and embrace this assurance, as it not only impacts their daily lives but also their relationship with God.

1. Assurance Through the Promise of Jesus Christ

Jesus Christ made profound promises regarding salvation and eternal life. One of the most reassuring promises is found in John 10:28-29 (KJV):

"And I give unto them eternal life; and they shall never perish, neither shall any man pluck them out of my hand. My Father, which gave them me, is greater than all; and no man is able to pluck them out of my Father’s hand."

This promise emphasizes that once believers are in Christ's care, they are secure and cannot be removed from His protection. This security is affirmed by the power of God the Father, highlighting the divine assurance of eternal life.

2. Assurance Through the Work of the Holy Spirit

The Holy Spirit plays a crucial role in affirming a believer's salvation. The indwelling of the Holy Spirit is a guarantee of our salvation, as described in Ephesians 1:13-14 (KJV):

"In whom ye also trusted, after that ye heard the word of truth, the gospel of your salvation: in whom also after that ye believed, ye were sealed with that holy Spirit of promise, Which is the earnest of our inheritance until the redemption of the purchased possession, unto the praise of his glory."

The Holy Spirit serves as a seal, marking believers as God’s own and guaranteeing their inheritance. This indwelling presence confirms that believers are secure in their salvation and assures them of their future redemption.

Moreover, The Holy Spirit plays a crucial role in affirming a believer's salvation. Romans 8:16 (KJV) states:

"The Spirit itself beareth witness with our spirit, that we are the children of God:"

The Holy Spirit confirms our status as children of God, providing an internal witness to our salvation. This spiritual affirmation reassures believers of their secure relationship with God.

3. Assurance Through the Witness of Scripture

Scripture provides clear assurances of salvation to those who believe in Jesus Christ. 1 John 5:11-13 (KJV) offers a definitive declaration of this assurance:

"And this is the record, that God hath given to us eternal life, and this life is in his Son. He that hath the Son hath life; and he that hath not the Son of God hath not life. These things have I written unto you that believe on the name of the Son of God; that ye may know that ye have eternal life, and that ye may believe on the name of the Son of God."

John’s letter assures believers that eternal life is granted through faith in Jesus Christ. The purpose of the epistle is to provide certainty of eternal life to those who trust in Christ.

4. Assurance Through a Changed Life

A transformed life is a testament to genuine salvation. 2 Corinthians 5:17 (KJV) explains:

"Therefore if any man be in Christ, he is a new creature: old things are passed away; behold, all things are become new."

The evidence of a changed life—a new creation in Christ—serves as assurance of one’s salvation. The presence of new desires, behaviors, and a pursuit of holiness indicate the work of Christ in the believer’s life.

5. Assurance Through Perseverance in Faith

The ability to persevere in faith is another indicator of salvation. Philippians 1:6 (KJV) offers encouragement regarding perseverance:

"Being confident of this very thing, that he which hath begun a good work in you will perform it until the day of Jesus Christ:"

God’s commitment to completing the work He began in believers assures them of their ongoing salvation. The continued growth and perseverance in faith reflect the certainty of one’s salvation.

6. Assurance Through Confession and Belief

The foundation of assurance lies in confessing Jesus Christ as Lord and believing in His resurrection. Romans 10:9-10 (KJV) states:

"That if thou shalt confess with thy mouth the Lord Jesus, and shalt believe in thine heart that God hath raised him from the dead, thou shalt be saved. For with the heart man believeth unto righteousness; and with the mouth confession is made unto salvation."

Confession and belief in Jesus Christ as Lord and Savior are the steps to salvation, and this confession serves as the basis for assurance.

The assurance of salvation through Jesus Christ is grounded in His promises, the indwelling work of the Holy Spirit, the witness of Scripture, the evidence of a changed life, perseverance in faith, and the act of confession and belief. The Holy Spirit's indwelling as a guarantee of salvation provides believers with a profound sense of security and assurance. Embracing this assurance not only provides peace and security but also empowers believers to live a life that reflects their eternal hope in Christ.
