Introduction
The doctrine of Sola Scriptura, meaning "Scripture Alone," is one of the five foundational principles of the Reformation. It asserts that the Bible is the ultimate and sole authority for faith, doctrine, and practice. This teaching stands in contrast to traditions that place equal or greater authority on church teachings, councils, or human traditions.
A key aspect of Sola Scriptura is The Veracity of the Scripture—the absolute truthfulness and reliability of God’s Word. The Bible is not only divinely inspired but also infallible and inerrant. It is the unchanging standard against which all doctrines, traditions, and spiritual experiences must be tested.
In this article, we will explore the authority, sufficiency, and veracity of Scripture.
1. The Veracity of the Scripture: The Bible as the Inspired Word of God
The foundation of Sola Scriptura is the truthfulness and divine origin of Scripture. The Bible is not a product of human wisdom but is given by God Himself.
2 Timothy 3:16-17
"All scripture is given by inspiration of God, and is profitable for doctrine, for reproof, for correction, for instruction in righteousness: That the man of God may be perfect, throughly furnished unto all good works."
Since all Scripture is God-breathed, it is completely true and free from error. It is sufficient for teaching, correction, and spiritual maturity.
Numbers 23:19
"God is not a man, that he should lie; neither the son of man, that he should repent: hath he said, and shall he not do it? or hath he spoken, and shall he not make it good?"
Because God does not lie, His Word is always true. The veracity of Scripture is guaranteed by the very nature of God Himself.
John 17:17
"Sanctify them through thy truth: thy word is truth."
Jesus explicitly declares that God’s Word is truth. If the Bible is true in all that it teaches, then it must be the final and highest authority.
2. Scripture Is Superior to Human Traditions
The Bible warns against placing human traditions above or alongside God's Word.
Mark 7:7-9
"Howbeit in vain do they worship me, teaching for doctrines the commandments of men. For laying aside the commandment of God, ye hold the tradition of men, as the washing of pots and cups: and many other such like things ye do. And he said unto them, Full well ye reject the commandment of God, that ye may keep your own tradition."
Jesus rebuked the Pharisees for prioritizing traditions over God’s commandments. This principle underscores Sola Scriptura—human traditions must never replace the authority of Scripture.
Colossians 2:8
"Beware lest any man spoil you through philosophy and vain deceit, after the tradition of men, after the rudiments of the world, and not after Christ."
Believers are warned against being led astray by human traditions and worldly philosophies. The Bible remains the unchanging standard for faith and doctrine.
3. The Sufficiency of Scripture for Salvation
The Word of God is all that is needed for salvation and spiritual growth.
Romans 10:17
"So then faith cometh by hearing, and hearing by the word of God."
Faith is birthed through hearing the Word of God, not through man-made doctrines or traditions. The Bible alone contains the message of salvation.
John 5:39
"Search the scriptures; for in them ye think ye have eternal life: and they are they which testify of me."
Jesus pointed to the Scriptures as the ultimate testimony concerning Him. They contain the words of eternal life, directing people to Christ as the only Savior.
1 Peter 1:23-25
"Being born again, not of corruptible seed, but of incorruptible, by the word of God, which liveth and abideth for ever. For all flesh is as grass, and all the glory of man as the flower of grass. The grass withereth, and the flower thereof falleth away: But the word of the Lord endureth for ever. And this is the word which by the gospel is preached unto you."
The eternal nature of God’s Word means that it alone is sufficient for salvation. Human traditions fade, but Scripture remains unchanging and enduring.
4. Scripture Judges All Teachings and Spirits
The Bible is the standard by which all teachings, prophecies, and doctrines must be tested.
Acts 17:11
"These were more noble than those in Thessalonica, in that they received the word with all readiness of mind, and searched the scriptures daily, whether those things were so."
The Bereans were commended for testing even the Apostle Paul’s teaching against Scripture. This reinforces the principle that God’s Word is the final authority in all matters of faith.
1 John 4:1
"Beloved, believe not every spirit, but try the spirits whether they are of God: because many false prophets are gone out into the world."
Christians are commanded to test all spiritual teachings against the Word of God. Any doctrine that contradicts Scripture must be rejected.
5. The Permanence and Unchanging Nature of God's Word
God’s Word is eternal, unchangeable, and authoritative for all generations.
Isaiah 40:8
"The grass withereth, the flower fadeth: but the word of our God shall stand for ever."
While human wisdom and traditions change, God’s Word remains firm forever.
Matthew 24:35
"Heaven and earth shall pass away, but my words shall not pass away."
Jesus Himself affirmed the enduring nature of Scripture, emphasizing its eternal authority.
Psalm 12:6-7
"The words of the Lord are pure words: as silver tried in a furnace of earth, purified seven times. Thou shalt keep them, O Lord, thou shalt preserve them from this generation for ever."
God not only inspired the Scriptures but also preserved them. His Word remains uncorrupted and trustworthy through all generations.
Conclusion
The doctrine of Sola Scriptura teaches that Scripture alone is the final authority for faith, doctrine, and Christian living. It is divinely inspired, completely sufficient, and superior to human traditions.
Furthermore, The Veracity of the Scripture assures us that God’s Word is entirely true, reliable, and unchanging. Every doctrine, teaching, and tradition must be tested by the unshakable foundation of God’s Word.
May we hold fast to the truth, authority, and veracity of Scripture, knowing that it alone provides the guidance that leads to salvation and righteousness.

DEVOTIONAL WEEK 4:
The Authority of the Scripture
After reading the article about Sola Scriptura, it really made me think. It's all about the Bible being the ultimate authority, right? Walang tradisyon ng tao na dapat mas mataas dito. Parang sa buhay natin, madalas tayo nagtitiwala sa sabi ng iba, or sa kung ano 'yong nakasanayan na. Pero, this article emphasizes na dapat ang Bible ang maging basehan natin sa pananampalataya at sa mga ginagawa natin.
Minsan, nakakatukso sumunod sa uso or gawin kung ano yung "in." Pero kung iisipin mo, ang Bible ay nag-offer ng solid foundation. Parang may reliable friend ka na laging nagsasabi ng totoo, kahit mahirap pakinggan. 'Yong mga verses na shinare, lalo na 'yong about sa Scripture na God-breathed, ay nagpapaalala sa atin na hindi lang siya basta-bastang libro.
Ang challenge ngayon, paano natin ia-apply itong Sola Scriptura sa pang-araw-araw nating buhay? Paano natin mas gagamitin ang Bible as our guide? Siguro, puwede tayo mag-start by reading it more often, hindi lang during church or devotionals. Puwede rin natin subukan intindihin itong mas mabuti, humingi ng guidance from the Holy Spirit.
Hindi madali, siyempre. May mga times na mahihirapan tayo intindihin 'yong ibang passages or matetempt tayo mag-compromise. Pero pinaalala sa atin sa article na ang Word of God ay unchanging. It's a lamp unto our feet, a light to our path. Kaya, let's hold fast to the truth, authority, and veracity of Scripture.

It’s not just a historical document or a collection of moral teachings, it is the living Word of God, divinely inspired and completely sufficient. This truth challenges me to examine my beliefs and practices, not through the lens of popular opinion or tradition, but through the unchanging standard of God’s Word. The veracity of Scripture gives me confidence that I’m not building my life on shaky ground. Ang katotohanan ng kasulatan ay nagbibigay sa akin ng kapanatagan. Sa panahon kung kailan tila nababago ang kahulugan ng “katotohanan,” nananatiling matatag ang Salita ng Diyos. Tulad ng sinasabi sa Psalm 119:105 “Thy word is a lamp unto my feet, and a light unto my path.” It’s a daily reminder that God’s Word illuminates the way forward, especially when life feels uncertain. Ang pagkapit sa kasulatan ay hindi laging madali, lalo na kapag ang mundo ay tila hinihila tayo sa ibang direksyon. Sa bawat decision, sa bawat struggle, ang mga salita ng Diyos ang nagiging guide ko. Sa bawat pagdududa, bumabalik ako sa katotohanang na ang Salita ng Diyos ay totoo, maaasahan, at hindi nagbabago. Dito ko natatagpuan ang tunay na direksyon patungo sa kaligtasan at salvation. Not because of my own understanding, but because of God’s eternal truth.

Reflection:
Sola Scriptura – The Authority and Veracity of Scripture Alone
For me, this devotional or Sola Scriptura (The Authority and Veracity of Scripture Alone) really reminds me that the Bible should always be our main guide in life. Minsan kasi, we tend to listen more to what people say or follow traditions without checking if it’s really based on God’s Word. But through reading the Bible, I’ve learned that it’s the only truth that never changes — kahit magbago pa ang mundo, God’s Word will always stay the same. There were times na I felt lost or unsure about my decisions, but whenever I read the Bible, parang I get peace and direction. It’s like God is personally talking to me through His Word. Kaya ngayon, I try to make it a habit to read and apply the Bible in my daily life, kasi I know it’s the best way to stay close to Him and live right.
Para sa akin, this devotional reminds me to always go back to God’s Word kahit sa mga simpleng desisyon sa buhay. Hindi ko kailangang hanapin ang sagot sa mundo kasi nandito na lahat ng kailangan ko—guidance, wisdom, at comfort. The Bible doesn’t just tell stories; it shows me how to live right and stay close to God.

Sola Scriptura: The Authority and Veracity of Scripture Alone
The Bible is not just only a book. It is living and a very important thing we should have in this world. Upon reading the context, it stated that the Bible is God-breathed and inspired by God, which is true, even though some may say that it just came from man and written by man, God only uses that man to reveal what He wanted to say. And if it's not God who really wrote the Bible, why are these people from different generations who write on the Bible all connected and point to the one who really created everything? So we can say that scripture really is reliable and true. Another is that Scripture alone is superior to human tradition wherein there's no tradition that can really save us, it is about our relationship to the Lord that will build upon reading and doing what is written in the Bible that can save us. The word of God is all that we needed to be saved and grow because it teaches us how we should act and the do's and dont's, it also direct are paths and our guidelines on to how we should live, so that's how important the Bible is, God didn't leave us emptyhanded, He leave us His words and the Holy Spirit that will guide us. Finally the Scripture is incorruptible and unchanging even if many people try to destroy it, God let it remain up until now and forever because God's words wouldn't fail until forever. As what He says in Isaiah 40:8 "The grass withereth, the flower fadeth: but the word of our God shall stand for ever."

Sola Scriptura is The Veracity of the Scripture, the absolute truthfulness and reliability of God’s Word. The Bible is not only divinely inspired but also infallible and inerrant. It is the unchanging standard against which all doctrines, traditions, and spiritual experiences must be tested.

The Bible is the ultimate and most reliable source of truth for Christians. When we say “Scripture alone,” it means that God’s Word is our highest authority in faith, life, and decision-making. It teaches us what is right, guides our hearts, and corrects us when we go wrong. The truth in the Bible does not change, even when the world’s opinions do.
I realize that trusting in Scripture alone reminds me to rely on God’s wisdom instead of my own understanding. It encourages me to read and live by His Word every day. The Bible is not just a book,it is God’s voice speaking truth, love, and direction to His people.
