Unit 4 – Lesson 9: Developing a Strong Prayer Life
Lesson Objectives:
✔ Understand the importance of prayer in a Christian’s life.
✔ Learn how Jesus and biblical figures prioritized prayer.
✔ Develop a consistent and meaningful prayer habit.
I. Introduction: What is Prayer?
📖 "Pray without ceasing." – 1 Thessalonians 5:17
🔹 Prayer is our direct communication with God.
🔹 It is not just about asking for things but also about worshiping, thanking, and seeking guidance from God.
🔹 A strong prayer life helps us grow spiritually and keeps us connected to God.
💡 Discussion Question:
How often do you pray, and what do you pray about?
II. Why is Prayer Important?
✅ 1. Jesus Set the Example of Prayer
📖 "And he withdrew himself into the wilderness, and prayed." – Luke 5:16
- Even though Jesus was the Son of God, He prayed daily.
- He prayed early in the morning (Mark 1:35), before making big decisions, and in times of struggle (Gethsemane).
🔹 Lesson: If Jesus needed prayer, we need it even more!
✅ 2. Prayer Strengthens Our Relationship with God
📖 "Draw nigh to God, and he will draw nigh to you." – James 4:8
- The more we talk to God, the closer we grow to Him.
- Just like friendships, relationships grow through communication.
🔹 Lesson: Make prayer a daily habit, not just in emergencies.
✅ 3. Prayer Brings Peace and Strength
📖 "Be careful for nothing; but in every thing by prayer and supplication with thanksgiving let your requests be made known unto God." – Philippians 4:6
- Prayer helps us release worries and receive God’s peace.
- It gives us strength during struggles and wisdom for decisions.
🔹 Lesson: Worry less, pray more!
III. How Should We Pray?
📖 "After this manner therefore pray ye: Our Father which art in heaven, Hallowed be thy name." – Matthew 6:9
🔹 Jesus taught us how to pray in the Lord’s Prayer.
🔹 Use the ACTS Method as a guide:
🛐 A.C.T.S. – Four Key Parts of Prayer
✔ A – Adoration (Worshiping God)
- Recognizing who God is and praising Him.
- Example: "Lord, You are holy and powerful. I worship You!"
✔ C – Confession (Asking for Forgiveness)
- Admitting our sins and repenting.
- Example: "Forgive me, Lord, for my impatience and anger today."
✔ T – Thanksgiving (Gratitude to God)
- Thanking God for His blessings.
- Example: "Thank You, Lord, for my family and the food I ate today."
✔ S – Supplication (Making Requests)
- Asking for help, strength, or guidance.
- Example: "Lord, help me in my studies and bless my family."
💡 Application: Try following this pattern in your daily prayers!
IV. Overcoming Struggles in Prayer
✅ 1. What If I Don’t Feel Like Praying?
📖 "Likewise the Spirit also helpeth our infirmities: for we know not what we should pray for as we ought." – Romans 8:26
✔ Pray anyway! Even when we don’t know what to say, God helps us pray.
✅ 2. What If I Get Distracted?
📖 "Set your affection on things above, not on things on the earth." – Colossians 3:2
✔ Find a quiet place and remove distractions.
✔ Write down your prayers to stay focused.
✅ 3. What If I Don’t See Immediate Answers?
📖 "Wait on the Lord: be of good courage, and he shall strengthen thine heart." – Psalm 27:14
✔ God answers in His perfect time. Keep praying and trusting!
V. Practical Ways to Build a Strong Prayer Life
✔ Set a Specific Time to Pray Daily (Example: Morning or before bed).
✔ Keep a Prayer Journal – Write prayers and testimonies of answered prayers.
✔ Pray with a Friend or Family Member for encouragement.
✔ Pray Over Bible Verses – Use God’s Word in your prayers.
✔ Pray Before Making Decisions – Big or small, seek God’s guidance.
📌 Challenge: Pray every day this week using the A.C.T.S. model.
VI. Activity: "Prayer Commitment Card"
✔ Students write their personal prayer goals (Example: "I will pray every morning before school.")
✔ Students choose a prayer partner to encourage one another.
📖 Memory Verse:
"Call unto me, and I will answer thee, and shew thee great and mighty things, which thou knowest not." – Jeremiah 33:3
