Lesson 16
Abounding in Good Works Until His Appearing
Scripture Reading: Titus 2:13–14; 1 Corinthians 15:58; Galatians 6:9–10
Theme:
As we await the blessed hope of Christ’s return, we are called to abound in good works—not as a means of salvation, but as the fruit of a heart that is eagerly expecting the Lord. The last days are not a time to withdraw from service but to intensify our labor for the Kingdom.
Lesson Outline:
1. The Motivation for Good Works in the End Times
-
Titus 2:13–14 – “Looking for that blessed hope, and the glorious appearing of the great God and our Saviour Jesus Christ; Who gave himself for us, that he might redeem us from all iniquity, and purify unto himself a peculiar people, zealous of good works.”
-
The nearness of His return should inspire us to action, not passivity.
-
We are not just “waiting,” we are “working” while we wait.
2. The Nature of Abounding in Good Works
-
1 Corinthians 15:58 – “Therefore, my beloved brethren, be ye stedfast, unmoveable, always abounding in the work of the Lord…”
-
“Abounding” means going beyond minimal effort—serving with excellence and generosity.
-
Good works include acts of kindness, evangelism, discipleship, and helping the poor.
3. The Urgency of Doing Good Now
-
Galatians 6:9–10 – “And let us not be weary in well doing: for in due season we shall reap, if we faint not. As we have therefore opportunity, let us do good unto all men, especially unto them who are of the household of faith.”
-
The “opportunity” is limited—time is running out before Christ returns.
-
We will not have the same chances in eternity to serve in this way.
4. The Eternal Reward for Faithful Service
-
Matthew 25:21 – “Well done, thou good and faithful servant… enter thou into the joy of thy lord.”
-
Every good work done in Christ’s name will be remembered and rewarded.
-
In the end times, service becomes more precious because it’s done in difficult days.
Application Points:
-
Evaluate: Am I abounding or just coasting in my service to God?
-
Prioritize: Make intentional time for acts of service each week.
-
Encourage: Motivate fellow believers to serve alongside you.
Reflection Question:
What “good work” is God calling you to step into this week as you await His coming?
Prayer:
Lord, fill my heart with zeal for Your work. Help me to see every day as an opportunity to serve You and others, so that when You return, I may be found faithful, fruitful, and ready to enter into Your joy. Amen.
