Lesson 7: Maintaining Hope in the Promise of His Return
Scripture Reading:
-
John 14:1–3 – "Let not your heart be troubled: ye believe in God, believe also in me. In my Father's house are many mansions: if it were not so, I would have told you. I go to prepare a place for you. And if I go and prepare a place for you, I will come again, and receive you unto myself; that where I am, there ye may be also."
-
Titus 2:13 – "Looking for that blessed hope, and the glorious appearing of the great God and our Saviour Jesus Christ."
-
1 Thessalonians 4:16–18 – "For the Lord himself shall descend from heaven with a shout, with the voice of the archangel, and with the trump of God: and the dead in Christ shall rise first: Then we which are alive and remain shall be caught up together with them in the clouds, to meet the Lord in the air: and so shall we ever be with the Lord. Wherefore comfort one another with these words."
I. The Importance of Hope in the Christian Life
-
Hope is not mere wishful thinking—it is a confident expectation based on God’s promises.
-
This hope is anchored in Christ’s return and the eternal life promised to all believers.
-
Without hope, the believer’s journey becomes heavy; with hope, we endure trials with joy (Romans 15:13).
II. Why Christ’s Return is Called the ‘Blessed Hope’
-
It is the culmination of our salvation – Our redemption will be complete when we are with Him (Philippians 3:20–21).
-
It assures us of reunion – We will see the Lord face to face and be with all the saints forever.
-
It is the final victory over sin and death – Death will be swallowed up in victory (1 Corinthians 15:54–57).
-
It motivates holy living – Knowing He is coming keeps us vigilant and pure (1 John 3:2–3).
III. Maintaining Hope Amid Present Trials
-
Look upward: Keep eyes on Christ, not on circumstances (Hebrews 12:2).
-
Encourage one another: Speak of His coming often; it strengthens faith (Hebrews 10:25).
-
Remember His promises: God is faithful; He cannot lie (Hebrews 6:18–19).
-
Focus on eternity: Present sufferings are temporary compared to future glory (Romans 8:18).
IV. Living in the Light of His Imminent Return
-
Live each day as though He could return today.
-
Invest in eternal priorities—souls, service, and sanctification.
-
Let the hope of His return comfort you in grief, strengthen you in trials, and inspire you in service.
V. Practical Ways to Cultivate Hope
-
Daily meditation on prophetic promises in the Word of God.
-
Singing hymns and songs about heaven and Christ’s coming.
-
Keeping a journal of God’s faithfulness to remind you of His reliability.
-
Serving others as an expression of readiness for the Master’s return.
