The Architecture of Human Flourishing The Four Relationships of Original Wholeness
Theme
God created humanity for relationship — with Himself, with ourselves, with others, and with creation. These four relationships form the foundation of shalom (wholeness, harmony, and completeness). Brokenness occurs when these relationships are damaged. The Gospel restores them through Jesus Christ.

Historical Orientation
When God created humanity, He did not create isolated individuals. Human beings were designed for connection. The human soul flourishes when it lives in proper alignment with God above, oneself within, others around, and creation beneath.
When these relationships function according to God’s design, we experience shalom. When they are fractured, brokenness enters. The story of redemption is God’s work of restoring what was broken in the Fall.
1. The Relationship Between God and Humanity
Created for Communion
The first and most important relationship is with God Himself. In Eden, God walked with Adam and Eve. This pictures ongoing fellowship. Humanity was created to know God personally — not just know about Him, but to enjoy intimate relationship with Him.
The greatest blessing was God’s presence. A person can possess many things and still feel empty if disconnected from God. The human heart has a God-shaped space that only He can fill.
2. The Relationship with Oneself
Created with Healthy Identity
In Eden, Adam and Eve lived without shame. They were secure in their identity as image-bearers of God. Healthy self-relationship means knowing who you are in God, accepting your God-given design, and stewarding your body, emotions, and gifts well.
3. The Relationship with Others
Created for Community
God declared, “It is not good that the man should be alone.” Humanity was designed for loving, truthful, life-giving relationships.
4. The Relationship with Creation
Created for Stewardship
God gave humanity dominion over the earth — to cultivate, care for, and represent God’s rule. Work was a joyful partnership with God.
The Restoration Goal
Through Christ, God is restoring all four relationships. True flourishing happens when they are aligned under God’s design.

2. How has disconnection from God affected the other areas of your life?
3. What would “shalom” (wholeness) look like in your relationships this season?
Prayer of Response Lord, thank You for designing me for relationship. Forgive me for the ways I have lived independently from You and others. Restore my communion with You, heal my inner self, renew my relationships, and teach me to steward what You have entrusted to me. Bring shalom into every part of my life. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
